Christel Escosa: What do you do/who are you?
I’m Rafa Dejota and I´m an artist.
Christel Escosa: Career highlights?
My last show entitled Axé was a highlight. In portuguese, this word means strength and shared energy – for me, it’s a really powerful message.
Christel Escosa: What excites you about the world right now?
The Future, technology, new imaginings and imagery, new wayz of communication, free+uncensored exchange of information. The Shift. I hope those changes will bring people together to do even more amazing creative stuff. I hope that during this time, people discover their true powers and stop being afraid and worrying about shit… I think we’re living in a really exciting moment.
Christel Escosa: Can you describe São Paulo’s style?
No man’s land inhabitated by wild animals where you gotta work hard / be nice to get it going. Plus São Paulo is a lot of FUN.
Christel Escosa: What makes you feel sexy?
Have a lot of sex! LOL
Christel Escosa: What makes a person attractive to you?
I´m often attracted to trainwrecks. lol
Christel Escosa: Who / what inspires you the most?
Anything that will keep surprising me, even after they’re *dead. I just hate anything predictable.
Christel Escosa: Who / what do you most admire in fashion/art now?
I love the designer who is an artist in fashionable disguise.
I also like observing trends on the internet blogs+tumblr, and how sometimes they aren’t related to what’s being shown on the runway by the designers. Fashion has a system of values that is often contradictory and that’s very interesting to me. I love when the attitude is more important than the clothes themselves… art deals with the unspeakable, so it’s hard to put in words. I appreciate anything that is eternal and has an atemporal message. I don’t care what’s being said, but it has to hit me right away. If I have to think a lot I get bored. If it does hit me, I end up thinking a lot about it, eventually. It just has to be authentic and honest.
Christel Escosa: Favorite fashion designer/artist and why?
Right now I really like Jeremy Scott, Jean-Charles de Castelbajac and Rei Kawakubo in fashion because of the unusual mix of materials, inspirations they work and the statements they put out. I like when the image created projects me to a higher level where there are beings who have weird moves, speak in unspeakable languages and are fun and pop in the same time. I love the Japanese in fashion as well, especially in the 80s, like Kenzo, Yohji Yamamoto and Issey Miyake.
If I have to pick a favorite artist in life it would be Lygia Clark. She was insane, a witch, and a therapist; and she used her work and life to cross boundaries in human relations. And she really did. The Neoconcrete movement in Brasil is something to dive in.
Christel Escosa: Skirt or pants?
Tight Pants :D
Christel Escosa: Describe your style …
damn… I never know how to answer this question!
Doggy style.
Christel Escosa: Future projects?
To paint a yinyang666cave 4 a party! That’d be so cool!
