Overlook for a second, if you can, that NERVO are just about the hottest sisters in music, (the quintessential adolescent boy’s dream) and actually listen to their tunes, you’ll find they’re pretty damn catchy. The Aussie girls’, recently signed to EMI and managed by Aus powerhouse Georgina McAvenna, DJ tag-team as well as record their own tunes and write, produce and feature on tracks for renowned artists including DJ Aoki, Jennifer Hudson and Ke$ha among many others. Their stars fast on the ascent, Liv and Mim took a moment out to talk loving fashion, releasing their new single and hating diamonte earphones with Sex!&Fashion…
Indigo Clarke: When and how did NERVO get started?
Liv and Mim Nervo: We are a sister DJ tag team and creative collaborators with a love affair for music. We write, produce, remix, sing, dj and collab with some of the hottest acts in the world and are signed to EMI records, managed by Georgina McAvenna of G Music.
Indigo Clarke: How would you describe your sound to someone who hasn’t heard it?
Liv and Mim Nervo: Our sound varies – depending on what we work on. Right now we are enjoying working on our own artist project where we are vocalists, many say it is in the electronic dance or pop lane. Our first release for this is a song called ‘We’re All No One’ which features Afrojack and Steve Aoki.
Indigo Clarke: Have you always been involved with music? What are some highlights of your career so far?
Liv and Mim Nervo: Music was always in our lives and was the only thing that came “easy” to us. Someone once said if you choose a job you love then you never work a day in your life. We certainly feel very fortunate to be doing music for a living. There have been so many highlights in our career but one that springs to mind is when a record we wrote for David Guetta (When Love Takes Over) won a grammy and went number one in 13 countries around the world. Total buzz!
Indigo Clarke: Who writes the songs and lyrics – is it a collaborative process? Is there anything in particular that inspires you to create or influences your music?
Liv and Mim Nervo: We both contribute equally to lyrics / melody / production. Our influences grow everyday with the ppl we meet to the amazing talent we get to collaborate with. Afrojack, Avicii and David Guetta are three such producers who we have learned a lot from and who’s sound we think is very current (and great!).
Indigo Clarke: What are your live shows like? What are some of the craziest live experiences you (or your audience!) have had?
Liv and Mim Nervo: We tag-team DJ – and play house music and mix in a lot of our own records and remixes. We love what we play so hopefully our audience feel that energy!
One of our favourite gigs recently was on ID festival in NYC this summer when we got up on stage with Steve Aoki and performed our current single – We’re All No One – live. We had finished our set and were watching Steve’s set when he asked us to come up on stage and join him. It was an impromptu performance and the crowd seemed to love it. It was the first time we performed it live too.
Indigo Clarke: Fashion and music have an often symbiotic relationship – What are your thoughts on fashion, sexiness and music and how they influence each other?
Liv and Mim Nervo: Fashion – to us – is just another creative outlet and way of expressing ourselves. We love shopping (who doesn’t!?) and love dressing up for gigs. I love that our job gives us an excuse to dress up and would probably die if I was forced to wear a white shirt and black pants to go to work everyday like so many people have to.
Indigo Clarke: You must get gifted a lot of fab clothes!
Liv and Mim Nervo: As we’re we’re doing more photo shoots, we are often given outfits to wear that we don’t like. It’s awkward telling stylists that you don’t like what they’ve given you, especially when you can see they’ve tried to pull clothes to suit your style… For some reason people feel the need to keep giving us diamonte headphones as props to wear in shoots which we find annoying. It’s so obvious and naff… It’s really great when you meet a stylist who gets you. We often come prepared to shoots and bring a lot of our own clothes for back up.
Indigo Clarke: What’s hot for Nervo?
Liv and Mim Nervo: There is loads on the horizon. We are currently promoting a single with Asralwerks – ‘We’re All No One’ which we shot a music video for which features Afrojack and Steve Aoki. We’ve got a club release coming out – Army, we did this with Ned Shepard and Sultan and have Omarion featuring on vocals. We have Nicole Scherzinger’s next single – Try With Me, which Interscope are releasing next week. We have written Avicii’s next single – Let Me Show You Love. We have a song on David Guetta’s current album – Night Of Your Life, which features Jennifer Hudson (who we are working with in December!). We are playing Creamfields in Brazil in January 2012 (ahhhh!). We are also playing Summerfield Dayze in Australia in December/January. We have a collab with Alesso coming up and another one with Subfocas… Oh, and we are on Steve Aoki’s next album, coming out in December. The song is called Living My Love and features LMFAO… So, busy busy.
