Wesley O’Meara
As rock’n’roll as the daring do’s he has become known for creating, raucous and risque fashion hairstylist Wesley O’Meara has crafted killer coiffures for high-profile magazines and television shows including Vogue, V magazine, i-D magazine, AnotherMan and Gossip Girl, among many others. The New York resident, sporting some of the best tatt’s around town (in gothic script across his chest are the words ‘Just Kidding’, ‘suck it’ tattooed inside his lower lip, ‘90s wuz here’ along an old teen-era tattoo), chats about the beauty of big hair, getting proverbial boner’s and just why sex sells with Sex & Fashion.

Indigo Clarke: Tell us about your day job…

Wesley O’Meara: I’m a hairstylist in the fashion industry, and I’m lucky to be able to do something I love and making a living off of it. You know how the saying goes – work is what you do for others and art is what you do for yourself.

Indigo Clarke: How did you get started?

Wesley O’Meara: I got started in this industry working in various fields, mostly with a public relations fashion background. I wanted so badly to be on the creative side, so I pulled up my boot-straps and signed up for hair school and never looked back.

Indigo Clarke: As someone working in the fashion field, and in the business of making beautiful people look even more beautiful, do you think sex and fashion go hand in hand?

Wesley O’Meara: Yes, of course. Who doesn’t want to be sexy? And when beautiful people are in our hands it is next to impossible to make someone not look sexy. Also, when it boils down to it, we are selling a product whether it is makeup, hair products, clothes…

Indigo Clarke: How are the two concepts translated or explored through your work?

Wesley O’Meara: When it boils down to it, I have to look at the clothes to decide what I’ll do with the hair. In hair school, they teach you what hairstyles look best with face shapes but that all goes out the window when you’re doing a shoot.  You have to look at everything and take that into consideration. I get jobs off of my images, so I need to create something that is going to attract possible clients, I’m selling myself with the sexiness in the images I help create.

Indigo Clarke: Define the word ‘sexy’…

Wesley O’Meara: Something that can give you a proverbial boner. Anything that gets you excited… Not always sexually.

Indigo Clarke: Does ‘sex sell’? And is there an element of this in the way you approach your work?

Wesley O’Meara: Of course it does! And figuring out why is probably one of the greatest marketing conundrums of all time! But, I guess it all comes down to wanting what you’re attracted to.

Indigo Clarke: When is fashion – or beauty – not sexy?

Wesley O’Meara: I think that you can find something sexy in everything… In my personal opinion, fashion and beauty is not sexy when someone puts no effort into it. Like, women who wear sweats out of the house or never bother with themselves… Laziness is never sexy.

Indigo Clarke: What fun projects do you have coming up?

Wesley O’Meara: All of the spring NYFW shows just happened so I’m excited to get all of my editorial done for the season. It is always exciting to play with new trends. And in the past I’ve been perfecting natural beach textures with hair and now I’m ready to bring sexy back with big bouncy beautiful hair. After all, the most popular girls in high school that got the quarter back on the varsity football team always had great hair!

Indigo Clarke: What is your sexiest fashion story?

Wesley O’Meara: Probably any fashion shoot I’ve done with Paz De La Huerta.  She embodies everything that is sexy in my mind.

Indigo Clarke: What are the biggest highlights of your career so far?

Wesley O’Meara: I was up for a major national television show, and even though I wasn’t picked at the 11th hour, it really made me feel great knowing I had been out for the gig. Sometimes we just need to feel validated, you know?! A little recognition goes a long way.

Indigo Clarke: Tell us something people don’t know about you?

Wesley O’Meara: I’m probably one of the most extroverted people I know. And I spill my guts on twitter all the time, so I guess any secrets I’ve had went out the window a long time ago! No secrets to tell!
