Urko Suaya
Argentinean born Urko Suaya has worked in the fashion industry for over 20 years. He’s shot campaigns, books, fashion, editorial and some incredible commercial work. But like I said while meandering through the Vanity Fair sections of the Annie Leibowitz exhibition that recently showed at the MCA in Sydney, ‘none of it means anything to me’. I could see the production, the lighting techniques, the retouching and the orchestrated set ups. Where as when I entered the section dedicated to her late partner, Susan Sontag, THEN I felt something. It was personal, it told a story and expressed legitimate emotions. Like any photographer I usually find their personal work more appealing, it’s injected with their own character and you get to see a little more or them and less of the client. Urko’s personal work is hard to find, but it’s worth the dig.
