Can there be politics without sex? Can there be politicians without sex scandals? Sounds like a double entendre laced beginning of a Carrie Bradshaw article, but I think there is a point to be made here. The recent scandal between Silvio Berlusconi and the 17-year-old Moroccan girl he supposedly had relations with highlights a larger issue that seems to be commonplace amongst the worlds top politicans. Politicians love sex, yet they are under so much pressure to regulate it – gay marriage, abortion laws – and promote a vice-free life, that they refuse their own natural urges to indulge in it. They project an impossible wholesome nuclear family ideal, and then some sort of binge – purge thing goes on (watch Schepisi’s The Devil’s Playground), giving rise to the very cliché political double life.
