Emmanuelle is the erotic novel that spawned an endless line of sexy spin offs. This eponymous work of ‘fiction’ begins with a young Eurasian girl named Emmanuelle boarding a plane in London to join her husband in Bangkok. It doesn’t take too long for things to kick off, with the first encounter being bestowed upon the lucky passenger she sits beside; and goes on to explore and navigate around our heroine’s sexual nature and the sex-apades that follow in her journey to ‘profoundly conscious sexuality’.
Supposedly penned by one Marayat Rollet-Andriane, who was born in Thailand as Marayat Bibidh before marrying her French diplomat husband Louis-Jacques Rollet-Andriane at 16, Emmanuelle was first published anonymously in France in 1959 when Marayat was 27 years old.
Emmanuelle has sold hundreds and thousands of copies since it was furtively distributed without either the author’s real or pen name, which was Emmanuelle Arsan. Later though, when an identity was revealed, it was also speculated that the work might have been a joint effort between Marayat and her husband Louis-Jacques. Marayat even appeared in one of the films, credited as the writer and director even though her husband had in fact co-directed. Check Marayat/Emmanuelle Arsan out:
So on closer inspection, it seems that Marayat’s diplomat husband might perhaps have been diplomatically using his beautiful young wife as a cover and a muse for his erotic prose (and later, his directorial ambitions). The matter of who actually wrote what has more or less passed into legend; most of the credit still given to Marayat, however much Louis-Jacques is due or not. Given those assumptions, it was then concluded that perhaps the novel was semi-autobiographical due to some rather noticeable parallels between Marayat’s life and Emmanuelle’s. Duh.
For those of us less literarily inclined, the films are what really took off. Instead of avoiding an X-rating, the first Emmanuelle film totally seduced with it, opening the floodgates for the countless to follow by becoming a massive success. It all started with the French Emmanuelle, starring Dutch actress Sylvia Kristel in the title role. The film pushed the boundaries of what was then acceptable on screen; with sex scenes, skinny-dipping, masturbation, the depiction of the ‘Mile High Club’, rape, and even a scene in which a dancer lights a cigarette and puffs it with her vagina (!).
A plethora of softcore and erotic movies followed the original, each with it’s own panorama of sex. One of the films even getting soundtracked by Serge Gainsbourg (Goodbye Emmanuelle, 1977). Wikipedia (purveyor of eternal truths that it is) states that “only films and episodes produced by the ASP (Alain Siritzky Productions) film company are official and based on the Arsan character”. Regardless, there are literally shitloads of sequels/prequels/series/spin offs of every size, shape, colour, actress and scenario imaginable. But WHATEVER – enough with the quibbles, let’s get to some sexy pics.
Not to mention any of the unofficial sexploitative spin offs and sequels such as Black Emanuelle series (recommended due to the true boner-fied beauty that is Laura Gemser as the Black Emanuelle), Emmanuelle and the Last Cannibals (1977) OR Emmanuelle Escapes from Hell (1983), NOR any of the spoofs or the different spellings ‘Emmanuelle’ suggesting unauthorised status.
